¡Pase el doobie, amigo! ¿Qué es eso? Oh man, Buzzkill!

For a brief shining moment, it looked as though Mexico was going to pass a law decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of recreational drugs. A few phone calls later, and Vincente Fox's government has retreated. Possessing small quantities of non-alcoholic mind-altering substances will most likely continue to be a criminal offence in Mexico for the foreseeable future. Good try though. They almost snuck the law through.

The War on Drugs continues unabated. How's that War working out, anyway? Is it difficult to buy E or coke in New York? Have all the high school kids in America quit smoking up? Remember boys and girls: One definition of insanity is to continue doing the same exact thing again and again and again even after realizing that your actions are having no impact.

From the BBC link: US officials had voiced concern that more lenient policies in Mexico could lead to a wave of drugs-related tourism across the border.

Ha! Don't they realize that there is already pretty healthy drug-related tourism across the Mexican border? I'm going to shock some officials here, but there's also sex-related tourism across that border. No, really, there is! You can take your hands off your ears now, Miss Manners, and stop going "LALALALALA! I can't hear you!".

Actually Miss Manners is quite sensible. I doubt she is supportive of American coercion of its neighbours. She might not be interested in what you are saying, but most likely, she'd listen, and agree. I'm sure she'd prefer you to phrase your opinions in more polite language - her shtick is manners, after all.

That was impolite? I thought I was being quite charitable to the Drug Warriors, by implying that they are insane rather than criminal.
