More on Bush's oil addiction statement

Just cruising around last night and I found a pretty interesting take on Bush's five little words in the State of the Union Address the other night. The website www.priceofoil.org notes that when Bush mentioned numbers, he specifically said that he aimed to reduce US imports of oil from the mid-East by 75% by 2025. Pretty dizzying to think about, until you realize:
  1. Mid-East oil imports are 11.2% of the US oil supply, meaning he is talking about replacing only 8.4% of the supply,
  2. Twenty years seems like an awfully long time to do this, and
  3. There is no target for an overall reduction of oil demand or consumption

If anyone out there thought that this was an Apollo-program type announcement against our 'addiction' to oil, you'll have to placate yourself with more of a mealy-mouthed non-statement instead.

The clever Priceofoil people go on to suggest that Bush should know that kicking an addiction is a bit more than turning down one drink in ten.

Go read the article and keep reading that site, I'm going to link it over on the right to make it easier.
