Jim Meek on Paul McCartney on Parade

What is it about environmentalists and seals? It's those doe eyes, isn't it? I mean on the seals.

The linked article provides an excellent commentary on Paul McCartney's self-absorbed quest to save the seals. It highlights his lack of knowledge of the issue at hand, a sad hallmark of the environmental movement.

And to add lack of perspective to ignorance, in an interview, McCartney compares the seal hunt to the slave trade. And this right after Black History month! What do you think the NAACP would say about that?

This issue is a clear case of info garbage vs info garbage. Neither side is well informed in the debate.

Really Robert - neither side is well informed? Speaking as a Newfoundlander, which 'misinformation' are we supposed to be feeding the public?

For an additional take on the subject check out Michael Harris's column - of course, he's writing from Ontario, so he's probably not 'well informed' on the subject either.

Where indeed does one go for information, then? I did some fact-checking on the Jim Meek editorial and couldn't find anything overtly wrong. You might disagree with the tone and conclusions, which would be fine, but just calling all of it garbage doesn't teach me anything.

If you have some more information to provide, don't just parachute in and say "these guys don't know what they're talking about", give some examples and proof.

I started this blog for two reasons - first to spout off and second, to learn about the issues. If you have more details on the seal hunt, let's see it - I'm all eyes.

Well, for starters - there's this paper published by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans - the DFO is a fine organization, consisting of tireless and supremely intelligent workers - right, Kev? It answers some of the myths out there.

Thanks for posting that, Dan. I actually have a paper copy of it and didn't get around to digging up the online version.

I realize that this adds nothing to the debate, but whenever I see some celebrity parachute in for a photo op with the seals I can't help but think that we should raise the Quota by 10,000. Just for spite. Anyone else notice that they never get their picture taken with the Big ugly mean worm-infested ones? I promise to add something constructive to this when I have more time at a computer.
