Poll on Canadian's attitudes toward Afghanistan mission

Steve V over a Far and Wide has a good summary of the Strategic Counsel poll on our nation's thoughts on the Afghan mission. Short version, we are sort of in favour of it, but 70% of us are under the mistaken perception that we are there as peacekeepers.

This is a sympton of our own general ignorance of things military as Canadians, but also of the lack of public consultation that is involved with these decisions.

The problem I have with the Poll is that it tries to create a distinction between 'peacekeeping' and 'combat', without ever really defining what the terms mean. The fact is, that if you look at the historical records - peacekeeping has usually involved either combat or the perceived threat of combat. I'll go further into this later, but I'll just say it's a false dichotomy for now.
