Stephen Harper, Bernard Shapiro, and the Sunshine Girl
Today's Winnipeg Sun editorial explains that it is hard to find a good guy in this whole Harper, Shapiro, Unprincipled Bastard saga, but they still give it their level best by decrying "Ethics czar has to go".
In the Ottawa Sun, the editorial is about an entirely different matter, but the editor, on command from the Dark Lord, I'm sure, had to conclude with:
Meanwhile, Harper is going on the attack by claiming that he won't participate in any Shapiro probe because he is a "Liberal appointee". That Harper is going after Shapiro is no surprise, I'm sure he still hasn't forgiven him for ruling against Grewal, but that he is doing it himself and not through the premier of Alberta or Nova Scotia is worthy of note. And another thing ...
Liberal apologist Bernard Shapiro has no business being in the post of federal ethics commissioner, much less poking his nose into Stephen Harper's controversial appointment of David Emerson.
In the spirit of starting things on the ethics front off with a clean slate, it's time for Shapiro to step aside and take his politically motivated projects with him.
Maybe he's finally happy with the selection of siverware and sheers at 24 Sussex and is actually going to come out and play.
[Edit: Doug mentions that the National Post is in on it, too. Of course I should have checked up on the Death Star, too.]
The National Post has joined in on this as well. This comes as no surprise.

Do you really expect anything else?

No, of course not. Just keeping my eye on the ball, that's all.

You know - call me crazy, but if Harper's objection to this investigation is that it's because it's Shapiro looking into it (and I'll give Harper credit - it's awfully coincidental for Bernie to discover his cojones, since he never displayed them during the Chretien era), why doesn't he call Parliament and elect a new Ethics Commissioner? You remember Parliament, don't you Steve? Where Democracy gets practiced? You remember Democracy? How about someone new - like, say Ed Broadbent? Of course, he might actually practice Ethics, so we can't have that now can we?
