Make Halifax taller - round 2
Part 2 of the extended United Gulf Development public hearing is set for city hall tomorrow night. The local media has been full of letters to the editor and commentary on the topic; it has obviously touched a nerve in the city. Opinions range everywhere from protecting the feel of the downtown to the risk of irrelevancy in the 21st century without 30-story penile enhancements dotting the cityscape.
Guess you know where I fall on the issue, huh?

Unless I'm mistaken the view itself from Citadel Hill is listed as a national historic site that is in danger of destruction. Can anyone enlighten me on this? In any case a municipal by-law about keeping buildings in your city limited to a human scale would solve this debate. Other cities have this. Halifax should too. If nothing else it prevents the erection (there's a pun in there somewhere) of ridiculous vanity projects by self-important architects and developers. I don't expect to see it any time soon anywhere in the matitimes. Municipal governments have an almost pathological need to roll over and play dead for any development that comes along. Although, tellingly, in my own community they are willing to crush you underfoot if it looks like you don't have enough money behind you to trouble them.

On this same topic theres an article in todays (mar. 8) Globe and Mail about an old building in Rothesay that was used as a business school and attended by many of Canada's business elite. It's actually a very nice old New Brunswick vernachular farmhouse and looks to be in good shape but is being torn down. Much to the dismay of the aforementioned elites. Now before anyone gets the idea that maybe businessmen aren't just concerned withthe bottom line after all, the space is going to be used as a park. There are too many ironies in this for me to list or even find them all. Did I mention that A prestigious NB private school and an Irving Brother are involved on the rip it down side. tay tuned. Ther'll be lots of opportunity to watch hypocracy and rich people infighting.

Would that "prestigious private school" happen to go by the name of "Rothesay Collegiate" by any chance?

Yes, it does go by that name. Hence the duelling rich people. Oddly enough it's an Irving that voted to rip it down. Possibly because parks are notoriously low profit.
