An Update on the U.N.
Further details from the New York Times on the formation of the new Human Rights Council, and another account, this time directly from the U.N.
The number of votes in favour of the Council reinforce my hope that this may actually go somewhere.

I wouldn't read too much into the American reluctance yet. They may come forward with some proposal that would get them on board. I am curious to see how much of their reluctance is tied to Israel, who also voted against it.

Well, according to the Boston Globe, Condi Rice has already said that the opposition is more symbolic than substantive, and the U.S. plans to cooperate with the the new seat. Certainly, much as Flash would like to believe otherwise, they'll wind up with a seat on it for 6 out of every 9 years.
