Day 2 of the latest fall from whatever the Democrats can fall from...
"The Republicans couldn't contain their glee over an attempt to censure the president for being overly zealous in defending the country against al-Qaeda," said Marshall Wittmann, a senior fellow at the Democratic Leadership Council in Washington. "This resolution was the only good news for Republicans in weeks."The fact that Feingold could find noone to co-sponsor the bid and that just about every other Democrat in the house sat on their hands or toyed nervously with their crackberries made possible the firm counterattack of Bill Frist and the Republicans. This would not have been possible if they faced a wall of Democratic unity. Sure, the motion likely would not have passed, as it would have required a handful of Republicans to cross the floor, but at least for the first time in about 25 years the Democrats could say "here is something we stand for" and then they could go to the electorate and say "we tried to defend your right to privacy and lost for now, but we'll keep up the fight". Their cowardice has hung Feingold out to dry and made them look more like the mealy-mouthed weak-kneed pansies they are.
In typical Republican-felate mode, Joseph Lieberman said:
Frankly, I'd prefer to spend our time figuring out ways to bring this very important program of surveillance of potential terrorists here in the United States under the law
That's the spirit! "It's illegal, sure, but let's help the president change the law so that it's no longer illegal."
I say to my American friends: I understand your pain and know why you don't go to the polls. I wouldn't either, given the options.
When will the idiots in the DLC realize that supporting something even if it isn't popular or likely to pass in the Senate or Congress is better than having not doing anything at all? That the odd failed attack is the cost of actually mattering? That having a strategy that sometimes doesn't work is better than flailing around with no strategy at all? When will they realize that the reason Americans vote Republican is that they have the appearance of having balls? Even as they get screwed over and over and over by them, they keep on coming back because the Democrats provide no credible alternative.
Watch now for the boost in Bush's poll numbers and a steady increase up to November when they will ubelievably win the mid-term elections *again*.
Such efforts never go to waste.
And please, please ignore the pleas that we're starting to hear about joining up with the Liberals - do we really want to follow the US down the two-party trail?
