Afghan yea votes

Here is a quick list I've put together of the Members that either voted in favour of the Conservative party motion to extend the Afghan mission, abstained, or were absent. The Hansard record does not record abstainees. Please forgive the formatting, I'm still new to the HTML gig.

(I note with some sadness that Nova Scotian MPs largely backed the motion. The two NDP Members voted against, but all six Liberals were with the government and two of the three Conservatives voted for the motion, with one abstainee.)

Arthur, André Portneuf—Jacques-Cartier Québec Yes

I've already commented on why I support our presence in Afghanistan so I won't bother going into it again. I will say that I'm angered by Harpers statements to the effect that he's extending the mission there regardless of the vote's outcome. Every thing about this guy lately is showing us a control freak who can be counted on to take his ball and go home if his will is thwarted. There's nothing surprising about this vote but that Harper held it at all. It was a cheap and tawdry way to divide the house in the eyes of Canadian citizens into "good vs bad" based on support for the military. Support that I know from experience will disappear from the conservative camp the moment that they decide that it's expedient. Don't believe me? Look up the Mulroney governments record on military spending. I believe that the Afghanistan mission is a good thing to do. i am more and more convinced that Harper wants us there for the wrong reasons. Ones he'd rather were kept quiet.

Would you care to comment on the fact that this is the first time in 60 years that the deployment of troops overseas has been taken to the house of commons for a vote?

In fact, when the Liberals made these deployments ONLY members of the Privy council were even allowed to have any details whatsoever...and even then the Privy council had no vote - The decision was made solely by Chretien or Martin.

Bodies of fallen soldiers were brought home at times in the middle of the night from Bosnia.

Our 35 or more "Loaned" Canadian soldiers that Chretien sent to Iraq during the shcok and awe were sworn to never speak about their precense there because "the Canadian public did not WANT OUR troops in Iraq. So Cretien sent them anyways, lied about it, covered it up and denied these brave soldiers any recognition for their bravery.

Would you endorse a return to the PM having full say-no vote, no debate and no details to the MPs or Canadians? That right still exists -it is PM Harper who wants to open up the democratic process.

Maybe that is just not workable.

David,

I'm not sure if you're asking me or Doug, so I'll chime in and hope that Doug does in turn.

I started this little blog just before the election that brought Stephen Harper to power, and somewhere back there one of the things I wrote was that I thought one of the good things that could come from a Conservative government would be an opening up of the powers of the PMO; he said all of the right things when he talked about accountability.

It hasn't really worked out so well in my eyes. Most of what I've seen so far points to even further agglomeration of power in the already too-powerful PMO. I realize that everything he does is underpinned by the fact that any minority government is in a pre-election state, but still...

Anyway, that was prologue. I have in these pages already stated that I wanted important decisions like going to war to go through Parliament, and not just whenever a PM deigned to have a vote, but every single time, enshrined in some law somewhere. I give the Liberals no credit for taking us into this war without going to Parliament.

By holding the vote, I aknowledged that a potentially powerful precedent was being set. However by having only a few hours to discuss such a huge topic, not to mention stating in Parliament that he was going to ignore the result if he didn't agree with it, the vote itself is purely symbolic.

I'm not sure how the repatriation of remains bears on the issue and won't comment on that here, as I've done it elsewhere in these pages.

I would not endorse a return to the PM having full control over these issues, but I have a hard time seeing that we've actually made a real step away from that. If democracy isn't workable, we're in trouble.
