Three reasons not to see The Da Vinci Code
To be honest, the place is like porn for atheists - I'm hooked...
Anyway, I'm reading along and I see this article apparently by Michael Medved, which is oddly enough written in third person, on reasons to not see The Da Vinci Code. In fact, the article is obviously written by someone else, someone sub-literate, so I have to wonder if Medved actually saw the final print. Anyway, he gives three reasons for all people (including non-Christians(TM) like him!) to not see it. They are:
1. It promotes conspiracy theories which make people paranoid. Okay, fine... if you think paranoia is bad. What's wrong with paranoia? What?
2. The book and movie "shamelessly (no less!) endorse paganism and goddess worship", daring to suggest that "you can enjoy elevated spirituality without the inconvenient moral demands of Christianity or Judaism". Maybe Micheal is Jewish, so he's shoe-horning himself in here, you don't want to be on the shameless end of the spirituality scale, I suppose. Apparently, the presupposition is that you need to be Jewish or Christian to have "elevated spirituality" - Buddhists suck ass in hell, and don't get me started on atheists!
3. The movie undermines Christian commitment. Ummm, I thought you weren't Christian, Michael, you said so above, so why would this bother you? Besides, if a person's grasp on religion is that tentative that a movie is going to unhinge him, then let him go, 'cuz he's already gone. Except the tithe, the church needs the weekly tithe, so stick around, but please, don't talk to the younger members of the congregation.
And the capper, the piece de resistance as it were:
Anything that damages Christianity in this country hurts the society at large
Yes, you read it here first, folks - The Da Vinci Code is hurting America!
Going to the movies hurts America. Unless Heston is in the movie, then it helps.

This has devolved into the theatre of the absurd.
Well, that review means that I must see it, just on principal. The book had a good plot and really good pacing, but was written to the literary standard of a Hardy Boys mystery. I expect the moveiw will be better, but I figured on waiting for the DVD (since I hae 3 kids and can't get out much anyway).
Now, well now the movie could be a smattering of shots of Tom Hanks reading from the book in his living room aned I'd go see it, just to make sure it makes lots of money and can flip the figurative bird at the fundie and right-wing idiots.
It hurts America. If that is the sentiment than America needs a good hurting.

Oh yeah, the Da Vinci Code makes people paranoid - couldn't possibly be the Federal Government that's tapping your phone calls, and coming out with a new coloured 'terror alert' every time Bush drops in the ratings - there's no conceivable way that could make you paranoid! Seriously though, I'm with Mike on this one, although I will disagree with his assessment of the plot idea - I'll agree it's not bad, but it wasn't bad when I read it 20 years ago as 'The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail', so I don't know how much credit I'd give Dan Brown. Plus, I've made the mistake of reading 'Angels & Demons' and can truthfully say that if you'd read one Dan Brown novel, you've read the plot to every Dan Brown novel, he just changes words. I am probably going to see it sooner or later, although this weekend is going to be given to the priority of seeing X-Men 3. If it's any consolation, I'm fairly sure at least one of the Deadly Sins will be present when I watch Rebecca Rojmin as Mystique parading around in blue body paint....

Haven't seen it yet, but likely will at some point. I'm not much of a movie-goer, so it's not an avoidance issue. That said, hurting America is a fun pasttime.
Hey Dan, now that you mention it, whatever happened to the coloured terror alerts? They just kind of faded into the background like bin Laden and the anthrax mail guy.
